LA RECHERCHE CLINIQUE EN CANCÉROLOGIE EN EUROPE : UN RÉEL DÉFI POUR LE XXIe SIÈCLE

Nowadays, the fight against cancer is undergoing major progress with the development of more accurate diagnostic and more effective therapeutic strategies. Innovative approaches need to be validated by high quality clinical research and international cooperation is crucial - such is the mission of the EORTC. In order to provide state-of-the-art treatment to all cancer patients, the rapid implementation of clinical research discoveries into practice relies on the adequate training and continued medical education for all health care professionals as well as on the increased awareness of the public and of cancer patients in particular. To face the challenges and opportunities of modern cancer clinical research, there is an urgent need to re-think the funding of biomedkal research in Europe. An increase of the financial support provided to high quality clinical research would be greatly beneficiary to European cancer care in order to preserve the possibility for doctors (and investigators) to practice a medicine of excellence and thereby promoting access to recent advances in biomedical technology, for the benefit of all cancer patients.%Nous assistons à une véritable révolution dans la mise au point de nouvelles stratégies contre le cancer. Ces approches innovantes nécessitent une recherche clinique de qualité et une coopération internationale telles que celles proposées par l'EORTC. La dissémination des résultats repose sur la formation continue de tous les professionnels de la santé ainsi que sur l'information des malades afin de garantir un traitement optimal à tous les patients. Face aux défis et aux opportunités que représente la recherche clinique en cancérologie à l'échelle européenne, il convient de repenser rapidement le financement de cette recherche. L'augmentation des budgets alloués à une recherche clinique de qualité serait très bénéfique en Europe afin de préserver la capacité, pour les médecins, d'exercer une médecine d'excellence et aussi de promouvoir les progrès récents de la technologie biomédicale.
