When Selandia sailed away from Copenhagen, the diesel engine was still in its infancy and for many years there would be a variety of approaches to its arrangement and operating format. Many companies entered the field with their own designs of which only a handful have survived through to today. Key differences were between two-stroke and four-stroke operating cycles, and single and double acting configurations.
