With the house paid for and both 'children' making their own way in the world I decided it was time to exchange my seagoing career for shore-based employment. I was thank-ful that I had expended the time and effort to achieve CEng status, and transfer from Associate Member to Member of IMarEST. I believe that 'CEng MIMarEST' in addition to my MCA Class 1 Engineering Certificate made a clear opening statement to prospective employ-ers about my professionalism, standing, and capabilities in a way not possible in any CV. CEng registration signifies conformity with the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), a benchmark applied across all the Professional Engineering Institutions that make up the UK Engineering Council (ECUK), where registration can be as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or Chartered Engineer (CEng).
