The UK motorsport industry has been through a painful, yet exciting journey over the last decade. This has involved soul searching and leaps of faith, but for those that embraced change, a positive transformation has improved the supply chain, encouraged innovation and, most importantly, created vibrant new markets. While there are distinct differences between the UK motor-sport and marine sectors, I believe there are enough similarities to make a valid comparison. People perceive motorsport as a wealthy industry, attracting lots of money and great success — the kind of misper-ception that is created by the "super yacht" sector within marine. At the top of the motorsport food chain — Formula One — this perception is more close to reality, but in reality some 95% of the supply chain comprises SMEs. In fact, the average company in UK motorsport employs just 12 people and has a turnover of between £2M and £2.5M.
