Mentioning corporate social responsibility (CSR) used to elicit amused but sceptical responses from the maritime industry, but nowadays owners, operators and suppliers take the topic much more seriously. CSR essentially means a business has to be a good corporate citizen, ie, not harming people or the environment, going beyond regulatory compliance and generally conducting itself in an ethical manner. "In the 21st century it is no longer sufficient to do business just for profit," remarked Efthimios Mitropoulos, former IMO secretary general. "The public nowdemands companies act with a particular social and moral compass."
