We've all heard the complaints before. "It stops on roll out." "It seems to load up a lot more than it should." "It dies under 800 or 900 RPM." "It doesn't accelerate well from idle." "It idles rough." These are the usual squawks for an engine that isn't properly "tuned." It isn't necessarily a safety-of-flight issue, but few things are as annoying and disconcerting as an engine that won't idle. It just starts the flight out all wrong when you're belching smoke from an engine that balks its way to the run-up pad. Not to mention the lost confidence found in an engine that dies several times before taxing from the ramp. Well, smoothing out that erratic and rough idle isn't at all difficult and it takes only a couple of hours on the most sophisticated of aircraft.
