摘要

Former New Yorker writer Bailey s biography of Spanish baroque painter Diego Velazquez is not a traditional art history book with extensive footnotes and references. Though he refers to the artist's paintings and the scholarship of other art historians, his more descriptive, informal, and narrative tone appeals to the general reader rather than the specialist. Though Bailey admits that much is not known about Velazquez's personality and that gaps exist in his biography, he situates the artist in the social milieu of his time.
