Healer, shaman, medicine man were just some of the titles given to those who practiced folk medicine. Many of these naturally occurring remedies involved the use of plants. The usage came mostly from trial and error, with the remedies then passed down from generation to generation, or from a healer to an apprentice. Other antidotes would target a particular ailment and might include prayer, dancing, sweat baths, massage, hot and cold foods, or other means not practiced in modern medicine. Some of these folk remedies are still in use today, like using aloe to counteract sun- burn.
