AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) met in Washington DC, November 3-8, 2001. The theme of the Conference was "Information in a Networked World: Harnessing the Flow". The meeting attracted over 850 registrants, who enjoyed both a content-packed ASIST Conference and lovely late autumn weather. The following are two submissions that describe some of the more interesting aspects of this Conference. Penny O'Connor and Julie Hurd write about a number of interesting sessions including: statistics and measures, library portals, and privacy issues. The theme of the Conference was "Information in a Networked World: Harnessing the Flow". The visionary Brewster Kahle gave the opening plenary talk. Kahle voiced the hope of universal access to human knowledge. Other sessions explored statistics and measures to describe network use, usability research, science information infrastructure, scientific publishing, and privacy. This year's leadership development program, delivered by Suzie Allard, was "Focused Talk: Learning what your Organization's Members Are Thinking". New this year were noon-hour poster sessions in honor of the centennial of the School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh.
