Medium was started by the Twitter cofounders Evan Williams and Biz Stone in 2012 as a writer-driven platform, a kind of hybrid outlet somewhere between a blog and an online publication. Since then, they've been growing the site through a combination of crisp, clean design and good writing organized into "Collections" that are shared and annotated among readers. Although originally an open field, Medium has increasingly been hiring editors to curate and select content on particular topics or issues. Recently, it launched Reform, a collection about design in its many manifestations, and hired a design media veteran, Sarah C. Rich, as the editor. Since its launch, Reform has taken an eclectic approach to design topics, publishing essays on everything from the tiny wristlet trackers used at Disney World (surveillance, big data, accessories) to the design of sound barriers along freeways (public art, transportation, sound design) to a long-form essay on Peter Walker's un-derloved landscape at the Long Beach Civic Center. There are several essays on urban and architectural design projects, but Rich looks broadly for stories that interpret the definition oi design. "I like to look at culture with design as my lens, things that are not on their face a design story."
