There is a fair case to be made that France in the 1960s was undergoing a decisive transformation. It was enjoying an unprecedented economic boom in what has been termed the trente glorieuses-the 30 glorious years between the end of the Second World War and the oil crisis of the 1970s-which were turning the Frenchrneconomy from backward-looking protectionism to a dynamism that was wholly new.
