The TGSG has had another successful year, with the recent surge in membership remaining strong at just over 300 members. At our last meeting the TGSG voted to offer free membership to those who join the AAG under its Developing Regions Membership Program, which we hope will encourage additional membership.rnAn important part of the TGSG's activities is to recognize outstanding work by those contributing to transportation scholarship. The TGSG has several annual awards to deserving students and senior professionals. At the 2008 AAG convention in Boston, the TGSG presented two student awards. The Masters-level award went to Lisa Murawski for "The Maximal Covering Network Improvement Problem (MC-NIP): Designing Rural Transport Networks for Accessibility to Health Care Facilities", which she completed at the University of California at Santa Barbara under the supervision of Richard Church. She examined health care access in Ghana by treating facilities as fixed, and examining different transport network improvements to maximize accessibility to these facilities. The PhD-level award went to Barton Cramer for his dissertation "North American Freight Rail: Regulatory Evolution, Strategic Rejuvenation, and The Revival of an Ailing Industry", which he completed at the University of Iowa under the supervision of Claire Pavlik. His dissertation examines recent organizational and geographical changes to the railroad industries of the US, Canada, and Mexico. In addition, this year the TGSG presented travel awards of $100 to runner-up winners. These went to Shitij Mehta (Masters) Carol Atkinson-Palombo (PhD), and Chris Fowler (PhD).
