Journey to God: Sufis and Dervishes in Islam

This volume differs somewhat from the standard introductions to Sufism such as the well-known works by A. J. Arberry, J. Spencer Trimingham and Annemarie Schimmel. The author is Chief Curator in the Oriental Department of Munich's Ethnology Museum and he also does some teaching of Islamic Studies at that city's university. His career thus explains the orientation of his volume. After a somewhat ponderous introduction, he claims that his book "is an introduction to the concrete, practised and lived forms of Islamic mysticism which tries to synthesize the perspectives and approaches of ethnography, history and Islamic studies" (p. vii).
