The stock market has risen a lot over recent years. It would seem that we are all a lot wealthier. In a sense, we are. Any one of us could sell our stock and buy things we could not afford before. However, we can't all do this. If all of us tried, our attempts to sell would drive the stock market down, thereby destroying our perceived newfound wealth. A sudden stock market rise does not make us wealthier in aggregate, as many of us think. We simply suffer from delusions of grandeur.
