Special Report: The Summit on the Academic Profession of Business Law

The Summit of the Academic Profession of Business Law was a remarkable success, and feedback from attendees was enthusiastically positive. The event brought together faculty from diverse institutions and perspectives unified around the subject of the advancement of business law education. Speakers, panelists, and presenters all contributed their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of all attendees. There is much business law faculty can do to engage their stakeholders, including colleagues, students, employers, and society. In a business environment that is increasingly beset by disruption, a thorough understanding of and respect for law can be a stabilizing and value-generating force.~(58) Employers that hire business graduates without knowledge of or respect for the law can cost an organization dearly in fines and penalties.~(59) Law is also a source of competitive advantage for organizations that understand what value legal knowledge can deliver.~(60) Law is too important to be left to the lawyers and law professors. Busi-nesspeople should not have to hire employees who are legally unaware. Furthermore, respect for law is one of the last lines of defense against an amoral civilization.~(61) We hope that the summit, and this ensuing report, encourages further explorations into the value of business law in business education, commerce, and society.
