Stronger competition, greater cost pressures and production overcapacity at European level are just some of the numerous difficulties being faced in the maintenance of Swiss Rail's rolling stock. Other difficulties include the growing number of train-kilometres covered with each timetable change and the ever shorter downtime of rolling stock. This situation means that existing resources must be used more efficiently to thereby improve productivity. Swiss Rail Passenger Traffic has set itself the target of improving productivity by 20% within a space of three years, and of reducing by a third the time vehicles spend being worked on in the Operating Maintenance Unit.
