This monograph considers Viennese emigre Paul Frankl (1886-1958), the significant twentieth-century designer and entrepreneur who created influential furniture and interiors which he sold from his showrooms in Manhattan from 1915 and in Los Angeles from 1934. The author aims to foreground Frankl as one of the main pivots of the modern movement in the USA, 'the first country to develop mass consumer marketing and sales institutions for mass-produced goods' (p. ix). The approach is chronological and biographical, charting a narrative staged as a journey: 'A Gende Exit', 'New Beginnings', 'Experiments in Form', 'Aposde of Modern', with a series of design decisions and outcomes presented as the products of opportunity and adversity. Arranging the primary sources in the bibliography by date reinforces this approach.rnThe subject is a fascinating figure, whose personality carried his commercial success as much as his vigour. Born in Vienna to a wealthy family, Frankl trained at the Vienna, and subsequently the Berlin Technische Hochschule from 1904 to 1912, a not entirely happy experience which may have formed his desire to achieve commercial success.
