European social models from crisis to crisis: employment and inequality in the era of monetary integration

This welcome volume is one that will be mined by more than one generation of economic historians. It is compiled by a team of 18 academic economists, who set out to explain how West European social models (by which they mean the constellation of institutions comprising employment relations, social policy and skill formation regimes that structure the supply side of the labour market) interacted with theirturbulent environment during a 25-year period punctuated by 2 major economic crises. The first was the point in the early 1990s when the end of the German post-unification boom triggered a Europe-wide recession and the near collapse of the European Monetary System: the second was the financial meltdown beginning in the late 2000s which turned into the biggest economic crisis since the great depression.
