The Euro crisis and European identities: political and media discourses in Germany, Ireland and Poland

One suspects that this elegantly written and thoroughly researched volume started life as a Ph.D. thesis, which is why, as the author tells us, it has been six or seven years in the making. Inevitably, therefore, it suffers at points from having been overtaken by events as the fast-moving story of the EU's lurch from crisis to crisis, the British attempt to escape and a number of other current issues play out. Galpin is concerned to establish not only the nature of'a European Identity'but the often desperate attempts to make it a reality. She argues that we must each acquire a European identity as a necessary attribute to support the functioning of EU democracy, thus producing additional legitimacy to its institutions.
