Asia and Europe: Dynamic of Inter- and Intra-Regional Dialogues

The interconnection and interaction between Europe and Asia has a long history but it is only in recent decades, especially after the end of the Cold War, that the economic, political and social relationship between the two continents has been given new dimensions. Based on individual (but not equivalent) integration processes and bilateral economic development, the relationship has become more dynamic and complex at various levels, and the scope of issue areas that are of concern to both sides has expanded from trade and aid to a wider range. In addition, the establishment of networks between the two parties at regional, sub-regional and national levels has institutionalised the relationship. However, with increasing economic-political, geopolitical and social-political concerns, whether there is a genuine dialogue between the two parties is still under question as various internal and external factors need to be considered when managing the relationship.
