Keeping the ship afloat: Armada Espanola sets out its strategy for stability

In his foreword to the 2003-2004 edition of Jane's Fighting Ships, editor Commodore Stephen Saunders remarked that the Spanish Navy (Armada Espanola) "has made rapid progress over the last 20 years to become one of the most effective and respected European navies", adding: "Its commitment to improving its power projection capabilities was underlined by the plan to order a 26,000-ton Strategic Projection Ship during 2003. This is just the sort of unit that will be ideal for out-of-area operations whether under EU or NATO auspices".
