As A. Edward Siecienski notes in the opening pages of the preface, Jaroslav Pelikan once speculated that, if there was a special circle in Dante's Inferno reserved for historical theologians, the homework assigned to them might be a thorough study of all treatises ever devoted to the question of whether the Spirit proceeds from the Father alone or from the Father and the Son. And yet, it is just such a task Siecienski sets for himself in this book. Over the past eleven hundred years, dialogue between East and West regarding the filioque has been contentious, and only in the last few decades has progress been made toward consensus. Nevertheless, the filioque continues to be a theological wedge that divides Eastern and Western Christianity, and Siecienski contends that unity on this issue can only occur once a full and honest account of the disagreement has been provided, an account that carefully examines the history of the doctrinal controversy without prejudicing one side or the other. His study is intended to be such an account.

The Filioque: History of a Doctrinal Controversy
