Research in e-science: current status and future direction

E-Science was defined as research carried out through distributed global collaborations enabled by the Internet, using very large data collections, terascale computing resources and high performance visualisation [1]. In 2001 the UK Research Councils launched one of the earliest multidisciplinary e-Science initiatives [2], which recognise that enormous and growing capacity of computing, storage, communication and software infrastructures could revolutionise the way science was performed. This recognition is based on the fact that procedures and practices of traditional way in which science is conducted are undergoing radical change. Such revolution includes modern computing, data and communication infrastructure as part of the science, or experiment environment, which includes not only the already ubiquitous high-end computers, storage and network infrastructure, but also emerging Web technologies. Together they formulate an essential infrastructure to support various research missions in many areas of science [3]. This allows the exploration of previously unknown problems via simulation, generation and analysis of large amount of data.
