Return hurdle: US banks leave European rivals in the dust

"Are we there yet?" For US banks, the answer is yes. For European banks, it is an emphatic no. And a growing concern for European bank chiefs is that while returns have improved in the past five years, progress has now slowed - almost to a halt. The gap in returns between major universal banks in the US and Europe last year is set to be about 550bp, even excluding loss-making Deutsche bank.
