German Federal Agencies to Coordinate Research to Set Nanotechnology Guidelines

Berlin—A number of German federal agencies have jointly embarked on a project to establish guidelines for research into nanotechnology.rnThe initial proposal, released Sept. 7, outlines multiple projects that would investigate standards for regulating research into the new technology. The paper proposes work on basic guidelines, for example, to standardize measuring techniques, but also proposes special projects on workplace safety, business standards, and the impact of nanotechnology on the job market.rnThe rough draft will now be distributed to experts around the world for comment. A final draft to lay out the exact methodology will be presented Nov. 30 at a conference organized by the Federal Environmental Ministry in Berlin.
