Online monitoring of drop impact damage on WGFRP composite laminate by the damage tolerance method through the acoustic emission technique

Online monitoring of drop impact damage is carried out on woven glass fibre-reinforced plastic (WGFRP) composite laminate through the acoustic emission technique. The acquired acoustic emission (AE) signals during the impact test were analysed. The AE parameters, such as: 1. AE signal strength; 2. counts; 3. counts to peak; and 4. RMS values, were found to be more sensitive to impact damage in descending order. If drop impact damage in woven GFRP composites is above a critical value, the material is replaced or repaired. The critical value of drop impact damage can be determined by the impact damage tolerance method through the compression strength after impact test (CAI). The impact damage tolerance value is correlated with AE parameters, which are obtained from online monitoring of drop impact damage. This correlation will be useful for online monitoring of drop impact damage in WGFRP composites in real-time applications.
