Ten years ago, when Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and then-chief technologist Nathan Myhrvold revealed their intention to set up a world-class research organization, many members of the academic community as well as competitors and industry observers were skeptical. Microsoft didn't exactly have a reputation for innovation; after all, it bought its flagship DOS operating system for a pittance from a small Seattle company and then licensed it to IBM—and the rest of the world—for huge profits.
