Open Source Will Pay Dividends In The Cloud

At last we know how Sun Microsystems' vast attempt to seed developers with free open source is supposed to pay dividends for the company: through the cloud. "Where is the money?" CEO Jonathan Schwartz asked at the start of his talk before the Open Source Business Conference last week. The question's particularly important given Sun's quarterly losses and sagging revenue, even if it has an arsenal of open source prod- ucts, including the MySQL database, OpenOffice productivity suite, and Glass-Fish Java application server. (IBM's reportedly negotiating to buy Sun, an issue Schwartz didn't address.)
