The growth of the Indian fleet during the first half of 2000 has shown a declining trend in terms of tonnage but in terms of number of ships it recorded some increase. Consequently, the strength of Indian fleet as on 1-7-2000 comprised of 517 ships of 7.02 million grt (11.46 million dwt) as against 510 ships of 7.05 million grt (11.49 million dwt) at the beginning of the year. The Indian fleet which crossed 7 million grt for the first time in December 1995 and stood at 7.05 million grt as on 1-4-1996, declined thereafter to 6.9 million grt and remained almost stagnant at that level for about 2(1/2) years.
