Revised Guidelines for Import of Ships

The stagnation in the growth of Indian merchant fleet continues and during the first half of 2001 the fleet strength declined to 6.83 million grt (11.23 million dwt) as against 6.93 million grt (11.34 million dwt) at the beginning of the year. This has been primarily due to the constraints on acquisition of second-hand ships from abroad and the absence of a conducive fiscal and funding environment at national level.
