Let the sacrifice not go in vain

The brutal murder of Mr Satyendra Kumar Dubey, a deputy general manager in the National High- way Authority of India (NHAI), on November 27, 2003, has dominated the headlines of national dailies across the length and breadth of the country. Mr Dubey, a civil engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) and an up- right and honest government official, had to pay dearly with his life for highlighting certain irregularities and lapses in a golden quadrilateral project section that he was in charge of. His brutal death has generated widespread outrage and disbelief not only amongst engineering professionals but also the general public. The issue attracted the attention of the parliament and the Prime Minister, expressing anguish over the incident had to order a CBI enquiry. He said "Like all right thinking Indians, I am shocked and saddened by the murder of Satyendra Dubey, an upright and dedicated officer". Stressing that the NHAI project is a great dream for the entire nation, he added "Thanks to the efforts of talented engineers like Dubey, it has made remarkable progress already and my government is committed to ensuring that those working on it complete it without any fear".
