PROFESSOR TARAK MOHAN DAS A GREAT EDUCATIONIST AND A SCIENTIST-CUM-HUMANIST

It is indeed a great honour to me - a student of Professor Tarak Mohan Das to be asked to write this introductory note about revered teacher on the occasion of his 85th Birth Anniversary. Professor T. M. Das who at 85 is still more active than many of us in his academic pursuits and extracurricular activities, was our teacher of plant physiology in the Department of Agriculture founded by Professor P.K. Sen in 1954 in the Calcutta University College of Science at Ballygunge where he became deeply involved in postgraduate teaching and research for a very long period of 51 years. Gentle mannered and soft spoken in nature Professor Das has been a student of the late Professor S.M. Sircar of the Department of Botany, Calcutta University under whom he initiated the research on plant hormones. He got his Ph. D. in Plant Physiology from the University of London in 1953 working under the illustrious plant physiologist, the late Professor F.G. Gregory F.R.S. of the Imperial College, London on plant hormones in vernalized embryo and extension growth of rye seedlings under photoperiodic treatment.
