Metropolitan area networks (MANs) are well suited to serve asnbroadband multiplexers for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks, tonfacilitate enterprise networking and to support future wireless personalncommunication systems. We propose and analyze a novel reservationnarbitrated (RA) access method which provides isochronous voice transportnover dual-bus MANs while enabling statistical multiplexing among voicencalls. In combination with a new cyclic capturing (CC) mechanism, RAnaccess allows stations to capture and reserve isochronous voice channelsnin a fair and distributive manner. This paper presents the RA accessnprotocol, derives an analytical model for general waste-free voicenreservation protocols, and analyzes the performance of RA access byncomputer simulations validated by analytical calculations. To assess thenactual voice quality, simulation results based on a real voice signalnare also presented. Results indicate that RA access offers significantnimprovements in channel utilization, as compared to prearbitrated (PA)naccess, while providing an acceptable quality of service. Therefore, RAnaccess offers an efficient voice transport mechanism for existingnswitched multimegabit data service (SMDS) networks employing the IEEEn802.6 protocol, as well as emerging ATM/MAN-based broadband networks
