INFLIBENT : its activities in Library Automation

摘要

Automation is pre-requisite for networking of libraries and resource sharing. Automation makes the library to provide the services very efficiently, rapidly, effectively, adequately arid economically. Information explosion, shrinking library budgets and information needs with change in character of user for access to information force the libraries to move towards the automation of their activities for optimum utilization of information services to the user community. The Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) programme is a cooperative venture for pooling, sharing, and optimization of library resources in India. It provides a channel to the academicians and researchers for exchange of information from sources within the country and abroad. The major concentration of INFLIBNET is on automation of all the University libraries in India by providing grants arid training. This paper describes the beginning of the INFLIBNET. It discusses the objectives and activities of INFLIBNET. It concludes with few observations of the slow progress of INFLIBNET. Author suggested few points for improvement and achievement of the goal in an effective manner.
