Ranganathan and LIS Education in India

I feel greatly honoured to have been asked to deliver annual Ranganathan Memorial Lecture 2005 of IASLIC. Firstly, because the lecture is named after Ranganathan, whom I regard as my indirect teacher, having learnt me subject from some of his direct disciples, like Prof. P N Kaula, Prof. P B Mangla, late Prof. S Das Gupta and others. Secondly, because the invitation has come from IASLIC, with which I have been actively associated for the last two decades. Since I have been connected with LIS education for a long time - around 35 years - and even served as a member to the last Curriculum Development Committee set up by the UGC, and as Ranganathan's contribution as an LIS educator has not been fully assessed, I nave preferred this topic, viz. 'Ranganatnan and LIS education in India', for this lecture. There is another reason too for doing so: the completion of 75 years (i.e. platinum jubilee) since the starting of systematic LIS education in this country.
