WHERE KNOWLEDGE IS FREE: THE JOURNEY OF A LIBRARIAN

Smt Kalpana Dasgupta is a well-known name in the library and information profession of the country. She has been the first woman librarian of the renowned National Library of India as well as the first woman director of Central Secretariat Library, New Delhi. She has been very active throughout her career and provided commendable services at the libraries where she worked. Even after her retirement she has been active in professional matters. It is heartening that she has found time to produce this book detailing her journey in the profession. The book has two distinct parts. The first deals with her personal journey covering her training days in Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and later at Syracuse University in USA; her professional responsibilities in different libraries and professional associations like ILA and IFLA; and her activities after her retirement. In doing so, she has mentioned about the challenges she faced as a young woman librarian working with senior people under her, in modernization of libraries and similar other challenges and has also hinted as to how could she meet these challenges.
