My mom is getting older. It's something I think about a lot, especially since she lives thousands of miles away. During the past few years, I've started to wonder who will care for her when she can no longer take care of herself. My grandfather spent the end of his life in a nursing home. The facility smelled of mold and death, and he passed away after just three months. His dignity had been stripped away; I wish we had been able to keep him at home. So when my mom asks about the future, I tell her, "Don't worry, Mom. I'll take care of you." But a lot needs to change for us to feel confident, as a society, that we'll be able to care for our parents when they need it. And these changes have never been more urgent.
