Collaborative Regional Development in Northeast Asia: Towards a Sustainable Regional and Sub-regional Future

In the absence of a coordinating body such as the EU or ASEAN, Northeast Asia as a regional entity is more often than not conceived on loose geographical ground. Arguably, to the general public, it is better known for the fragile security equilibrium related to unsolved historical and contemporary conflicts. Against this backdrop, however, remarkable progress has been made in the last decade or so in regional integration and collaboration. Multilateral mechanisms on security, finance, trade, energy, etc. have been widely established. If these are signs of a belated process that has eventually gained momentum, then Northeast Asia would have the chance to bypass political swamps and pave the way forward in the making of an emerging region.
