Im November 2006 wurde der freiraumplanerische Wettbewerb für den Magdeburger Hafen der HafenCity Hamburg entschieden. Ebenso wie die Piätze und Promenaden am Sandtor- und am Grasbrookhafen im Westen des neuen Stadtteils wird dieser Bereich, den nur 1 000 Meter Luftlinie von der Binnenalster trennen, nach den Entwürfen eines spanischen Büro gebaut.%An international competition to design the area around Magdeburg harbour and Overseas quarter of HafenCity, the former dockland of Hamburg, has been won by a Spanish company. The aim was to connect the old warehouse quarter with the river Elbe, incorporating the inner and outer Alster lakes and other famous Hamburg landmarks known as ,,Brandst-wiete". The requirement was to design city space that would appeal equally to locals, visitors and business people and BB + GG architects' entry from Barcelona received the award because of their eye for detail and sense of continuity. Unfortunately, their proposal of an area dedicated to ice-skating, skating and a swimming-pool was immediately dismissed as too expensive, even though this would have contributed to a lively and friendly use of the space and added a touch of real life to an otherwise highly stylised environment.
