The Syrian armed forces are largely outfitted with Soviet-legacy heavy conventional military equipment. Much of this equipment is aging and in questionable upkeep, especially given wartime conditions. Hampering the Syrian military further is the government's limited access to arms suppliers as a result of sanctions imposed by the U.S., the European Union, and Turkey. Another impediment is that Syria lacks the financial resources to substantially improve its force structure via force modernization or the upgrade of existing materiel.
