In their desperate defence against invading German forces, it was not only Russian men that found themselves in frontline action. Anna Egorova, aged 26 in 1942, became the first female pilot to fly the Ilyushin 11-2 Shturmovik. Earning the respect of her fellow pilots, she eventually became a commanding officer and flew around 270 combat missions over the Eastern Front.
