Alongside the high-tech Vauxhall assembly plant at Ellesmere Port on the Wirral peninsula are buildings that provide clues to the heritage of the site. Three double-banked World War One-era hangars, of the design commonly referred to as 'Belfast Truss', stand close to Junction 6 of the M53 motorway and several buildings of the late 1930s and 1940s are nearby. Between these remnants and the southern shore of the River Mersey is the sprawling Vauxhall factory, bannered as the 'Home of the Astra' motor car. The buildings stand on most of the former Hooton Park airfield; traces of post-1945 runways, taxi-tracks and hard standings are used for the storage of cars.
