As I was selecting articles to highlight in this month’s editorial, I was struck by phrases such as data scientist, blockchain-distributed ledger technology, and consumer health informatics that weren’t around when I published an article in the first issue of Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA) 25 years ago or in the earlier decades when the field of medical informatics was founded. The fact that I was selecting the articles and writing the editorial on Presidents’ Day weekend led me to think about founding mothers and fathers and if and how the fundamentals of our field of biomedical and health informatics have changed through the subsequent years. In this editorial, I briefly summarize and comment on 5 articles in this issue from that perspective.
