In May 1969, the Daily Mail newspaper organised a transatlantic air race to mark the 50th anniversary of the first flight across the Atlantic by John Alcock and Arthur Brown. There were several categories within the competition, with separate races flown in both directions. The London to New York leg began at the Post Office Tower in the UK and ended at the Empire State Building - the pilot or passenger would have to start and finish either on foot or via some other means of transport.
