A study carried out at the University of Pavia investigated the welfare of Italian firefighters, comparing professionals and volunteers in terms of symptoms of their'malaise'(post-traumatic and psychosomatic symptoms) and their psychological resources (engagement and mindfulness). To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first studies to compare volunteer and professional firefighters in relation to these specific variables. Data was collected in two cities with similar characteristics, in which the main risks to which firefighters are exposed could be considered similar. For example, the cities were both located in the northern plain area of Italy and both had a small nucleus containing several country towns.
