A story of survival

New york's Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Co is an undoubted survivor. Not only does it still operate on a route started in 1883, but 65 years ago one of its ferries survived a hurricane that still holds the record for lives lost and damage. On 21 September 1938, the company's 1898-built steam ferry Park City left Long Island for a routine 17-mile crossing to Bridgeport, Connecticut. After the regular 600-passenger summer season, the service was cut back to one round trip three days a week with the ferry's running mate, Priscilla Aldend.The winter service was unprofitable: Park City sailed with four passengers, a four-month-old baby and nine crewmen.
