In its infancy, the academic study of journalism knew what it was. Born as a subdivision of rigorous disciplines including history and political science, it produced excellent literature. Then, in adolescence, it developed a yearning to be taken seriously in its own right. It screamed 'I'm an individual', but revealed little to suggest that it was worth taking seriously. In the profession it claims to analyse, it still isn't.
