Understanding Urban Policy: A Critical Approach

As cities grow and change, the problems related to urban areas have become an important issue across the globe. This dynamic situation proposes new challenges for urban policies. Allan Cochrane's book makes an important contribution to urban policy studies, exploring as it does the complex developments in urban areas since the late 1960s. The considerations of urban policy are critically discussed by understanding the 'problematization' and social construction of urban deprivation and development initiatives in different contexts. The empirical focus of the book is mainly the United Kingdom and its complex relationship with the United States, both as a source of policy lessons and of some particular significant visions of the urban future. Cochrane also presents some comparative examples from other European cities, as well as from cities in the Asia-Pacific region. The book consists of nine chapters each focusing on an important aspect of urban policy.
