Governing Water: Contentious Transnational Politics and Global Institution Building

Water is certainly one of the most important if not the most important resource on earth. Water is the basis of all life on earth - not only human beings or animals rely on it. Water is used for irrigation, it is involved in almost any industrial production cycle, e.g. power plants need water as a coolant, etc. To fulfil this function, water has been 'pushed around', as Conca writes. Dams were built, wetlands drained, rivers diverted or used for dumping. Thus, from a basic ingredient of life water has become an issue of national and international dispute. It is therefore vital to establish an approach to global water governance.
