In attempts to compromise the wide discrepancy of the measured partition coefficients of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with carbohydrates (K_(ch)) reported by us (i) and others (2, 3), Hale et al. (4) hypothesized that the intrinsic difference in crystallinity of the different carbohydrate samples may be partly responsible for the observed discrepancy. Hale et al. quoted that the crystallinity in celluloses varies between 47 and 100%, with no data cited for the starch. The range of the crystallinity quoted is for the air-dried samples (5), not forthe likely more relevant hydrated samples, however.
